Abstract [en]

The topic of this study is how to teach reading comprehension in upper secondary school in vocational education. The work was based on three questions: What different approaches on reading comprehension do teachers use when they teach theory in vocational subjects? How do the teachers manage student responses in the classroom and how does it affect the dialogue? How does the structured text talks, making inferences, semantic mappings, questioning the author and reciprocal teaching, work in two upper secondary school vocational programs? Two methods were used, observation of theory lessons in vocational education and practicing structured text talks in the study of religion. The results showed that teachers used different ways to motivate and facilitate students’ reading of their textbooks. The teachers activated prior knowledge before reading and they read the text together in pieces and discussed it. After reading they worked with theoretical or practical application exercises. The dialogue in classrooms increased if the teachers took care of student responses through repetition or refinement. The practicing of structured text talks showed that it takes time to implement the reading strategies. It worked well to practice making inferences and some parts of reciprocal teaching. It was more difficult to practice questioning the author and sematic mapping. The conclusion is that all teachers even in upper secondary school need to become teachers in content area literacy and need to work with different reading strategies to improve the students’ reading comprehension.
