U.S. presidential election in tabloids : A comparison of the image and newsreports of U.S. presidential election in the tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen. (English)
Abstract [en]

The U.S. presidential election in 2012 was between the curren president and democrat Barack

Obama and the republican Mitt Romney. On November 6, 2012, it was clear that Barack

Obama was re-elected as president. Swedish media has followed the election with great

interest and we have been constantly updated on what’s happening in the U.S. during the

candidates' campaigns and the election. Media coverage about the U.S. election will influence

the public perception and influence our thoughts on the election and the candidates. The

purpose of this paper is to examine how the Swedish tabloids Expressen and Aftonbladet

portrayed the U.S. elections in 2012. The period under studie is two months before the

election day, 6 september to 6 november. The aim is also to examine what the tabloids focus

their content on presenting the news, what similarities and differences there is between the

two different tabloids and if the portray given is objectiv. To make this observation as

correctly as possible, the methods in this study is a combination of a quantitativ content

analysis and a qualitative linguistic text analysis. Theorists used in this study is mainly Jesper

Strömbäck’s theories about the election journalism and agenda setting, Jörgen Westerståhl’s

theories of objectivity and Johan Galtung and Marie Holmboe Ruges theories of news

evaluation. The study shows that t

he focus of the tabloids is in writing superficial journalism about the election by referencing to various elit persons who will or may influence the results

of the election. Romney generally receive less space in the tabloids, both in terms of his private life as well as his role as a republican representative. The content of Aftonbladet and Expressen have also shown a large proportion of different strategies and games the candidates play to win the election. The articals contains a lot of sport metaphors to decribe the election as if it was a game. The contents of the two tabloids were very similar when it came to writing about political issues, opinions and strategies. Aftonbladet published more articals with superficial content. Expressen however, has written more articles where they generally discuss the election. News reports about the presidential candidates are not objective because both Aftonbladet and Expressen has published more articles about Obama, both as a person and as a politician. Also, the journalists discribes Obama using more positive words and naming him the winner.
