”Grounds for some northen bitterness” : - A study of  how Umeå was constructed in conjunction with the state's notice of financial assistance to the Capital of Culture year in Umeå 2014 (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how Umeå was constructed in the local and nationwide newspapers in relation to the announcement of the State's financial support to the Capital of Culture in Umeå 2014. The study is focusing on power structures and ideological thought patterns, and with the backdrop of the traditional image of Norrland.

The theories that has been applied on this studie are previous research on Norrland, that geographical areas are constructed and critical discourse analysis. The method that has been used is Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis and his three-stages model who is based on text, discursive practice and social practice. The mainly results showed that Umeå was constructed as recipient because in all of the articles dependent of the state could be distinguished. The results also showed that there is a division within Sweden, were Stockholm represent the center and the norm while Umeå i constructed in periphery and represent everything that Stockholm not is. Especially in the nationwide articles there were similarities between Umeå and the traditional image of Norrland, while those in the local newspapers appeared tendencies to construct Umeå as a city of ambition and vision of the future. Which is contary of the traditional image of Norrland, which means that the results also showed a conflict between Umeå an the traditional image of Norrland.

The conclusions that can bee drawn from this study are,  that especially the nationwide newspaper continues to represent the ideological thought patterns in the social structure, that culture dosen´t belong in Umeå and that those who has power is the states.
