Abstract [en]

The purpose of the report is to determine if the introduction of a weight-based waste fee causes an increased sorting of packaging material and newspapers from household waste and if the household waste thereby decrease when the weight-based waste fee is introduced? A survey was conducted among 200 households in Örnsköldsvik and statistics collected from MIVA and FTI. People have in all time produced waste, but in recent years the growing amount of waste has become a major problem. To overcome this problem, people are looking for solutions to reduce waste. One solution is to introduce a weight-based waste fee and that is done in more and more cities across Sweden. The results showed an increase in sorting of materials, reduced household waste and less packaging materials and newspapers in the household waste. Many of the households that responded to the survey indicated that they had increased their sorting habits. The conclusion is that the weight-based waste fee affects sorting habits in the way of that more materials gets sorted out and less get thrown in the household waste.
