Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The leadership is considered to be the single most important factor for employee’s well-being. Only a few studies have examined specific leadership behaviors that foster well-being. Based on a health promoting perspective, this study has examined how leaders in the Västerbottens County Council (VCC) practice their leadership, if the employees consider their leaders to exert a health promoting leadership and if the work of the VCC is in line with current research. A case study of four workplaces was conducted. A total of 68 people participated in a questionnaire survey, and four leaders and three strategists were interviewed. Results from the study shows that the leaders in the VCC mainly practice their leadership in a health promoting manner. The employee consider their leaders to exert a health promoting leadership in terms of social support, trust, motivation and meaningfulness and moreover that they work in a climate for innovation and have a moderate self-efficacy. How VCC consider health promoting leadership is mainly in line with current research. However, differences exist between leaders’ and employees’ perception of leadership behavior.
