A place in the sun : Images of the world in he travel magazines RES and Allt om resor through apostcolonial perspective (English)
The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the travel magazines RES and Allt om resor are describing the world through their written reportages. In the use of postcolonial theory the sole meaning of this essay is to analyze if their worldview holds any tendencies towards racist and/or exotifing descriptions. Both pictures and writing will be analyzed through semiotic analysis and critical discourse analysis. The choice of investigating travel magazines in the eyes of postcolonial theory derives from the fact that traditionally travel writing has been one of clearest voices in spreading the colonial discourse worldwide. Some say that the world is still shaped by it's colonial history, with lingering racism, discrimination and inequality both socially and economical. The media is a powerful institution and that is why it's still accurate to try reveal if it's also the producer of stereotypes based on cultural/ ethnical heritage.
The conclusions that have been made from this investigation is that the two magazines seems reluctant to write anything that could be considered negative about places visited. In Allt om resor the voices of local inhabitants are rarely heard and the worldview that is shared depends on the writers own experiences. When it comes to RES the same conclusions are not entirely true. The pictures shown in both magazines seems to have a shared concept on what pictures that should be representative of the world around us. Through the lens one could see in this essay that the photographs where almost always of beautiful sceneries where the weather was good, the ocean clear and skies are blue. The beach seems to be a central motive in most of the reportages.
Overall the journalistic work in the analyzed reportages are not critical towards the tourism industry and it's actors. This lack of acknowledgement for the downsides of traveling is often criticized when discussing travel journalism and it seems that this criticism is still accurate.
