Degreasers are important tools to avoid oil and other light liquids to reach the wastewater treatment and the environment, where they can cause damage. The purpose of the thesis was to raise an inventory of industrial companies that had degreasers and whether existing degreasers work properly. A questionnaire was sent to all owners in the chosen industrial area, and then supervision visits were made at all industrial companies that had degreasers. The study showed that 29 of the total 43 industrial companies had degreasers. The major part of those were older degreasers of gravimetric type, which probably don’t reach the limit of maximum 50 mg oil /l to the wastewater treatment. More than half of the operators did not know the capacity of their degreasers, and only two companies had working oil level alarms. None of the degreasers had sludge level alarm or automatic shut off valve. Two degreasers had never been emptied, the greater part of the rest had been emptied at least once a year. However, 69 % of the industrial companies reported that they handle or use oil or other light fluids in their occupation, 50 % said that they use degreasing. Almost all operators believed that their degreasers were correctly dimensioned and that the care of them was sufficient, although the operators in general didn’t seem to know much about their degreasers. The conclusion of this study is that the existing degreasers don’t seem to work very well, but to know for sure, a sampling from the degreaser’s effluent is probably necessary.
