Education and ethnicity: Who do parents of foreign origin have to say?: A study on mothers' attitude to Swedish ground schools

One of the contemporary features of the international system that we live in today is migration. Nevertheless migration of labor is not the result of globalization; instead it has a long history that led western democracies to create and adapt institutions and policies in order to regulate the phenomenon in wavering contexts (Hirst & Thompson, 1999). Education is one of the sectors that have to adapt continuously, not only to social and political demands but to international conjectures as well. It is internationally recognized that children of foreign origin whether they are born abroad or in the western democracies that welcomed their parents, obtain worse grades at compulsory schools than native children. Studies have focused on different aspects in trying to understand the phenomenon and discrimination, segregation, national and institutional policies are some of those conditions that could lead children of foreign origin to obtain low grades at school. The present study focuses on the parents of these children who have been considered by a number of previous qualitative researches to be less involved in their children´s schooling and therefore represent one of the causes of their children´s low achievements. The study addresses immigrants who presently live in an area situated in the outskirt of Stockholm. The area is considered as one of the most segregated area of the Swedish capital. Keeping within the qualitative bounds, the study´s particularity is that it aims at broadening the existing perspectives by reaching the respondents through a snowball sampling as opposed to the common school-based sampling of the previous studies. Thus, its goal is to provide new insights to the phenomenon.
