The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes and behavior around sorting of food waste in the households within the municipality of Piteå. One goal was to obtain an answer to the question why the households in Piteå sort their food waste in the manner revealed in the food waste analysis that was conducted during December 2010. Information was collected through a questionnaire survey which was sent to four hundred randomly selected residents in Piteå. In total 146 people (36.5 %) answered the survey. 85.2 % of the respondents replied that they sort out most or all their food waste, only 2.8 % answered that they don’t sort their food waste. A majority of the respondents answered that they sort their food waste for the sake of the environment. The most common reasons not to separate food waste were ignorance, laziness, lack of space in the kitchen and time constraints. Only 12 % of the respondents had the knowledge about which process their food waste is treated with. It emerged from the survey that part of the respondents wanted more information about the process method for food waste, separation of food waste and the definition of food waste. The results from the survey didn’t show the same result as the food waste analysis. One explanation may be that respondents overestimate their degree of sorting. It may also be that those who have not responded to the survey are those that don’t sort their food waste.
