Abstract [en]

This study examines the cooperation between animal welfare officers and police officers, through a survey and a literature review. The aim is to examine how cooperation between police and animal welfare officer is working today concerning animal welfare issues. A questionnaire was distributed to animal welfare officers and police officers in nine selected Swedish counties. All counties in northern Sweden and the three largest counties in southern Sweden were included in order to balance the study between sparsely and densely populated areas. The response rate was 69.9%. Most of animal welfare officers and police officers had at least once collaborated with each other and most of them indicated that the cooperation worked well. The results show that the responses from the sparsely populated areas in the north and the densely populated areas in the south have followed the breakdown of responses from all participants with little or no difference. However, responses from animal welfare officers differed considerably from the answers of the police officers. This is probably because they represent two different authorities following their own laws and routines. The participating animal welfare officers were often young women and the police officers were often older men. This can also contribute to the differences in the distribution of responses. However, all respondents felt that their responsibility, duty areas and division of roles must be clarified.
