The aim of this study was to investigate the health of calves in dairy herds in the county of Västernorrland, Sweden. The aime was also to analyze how different housing- and feeding system affected the health of the calves and whether milk producers followed the animal welfare regulations. The results were evaluated in relation to the animal welfare regulations and natural behaviour of calves. The first part of the study was pointed to the total number of dairy herds in the county. A survey was sent to 151 farms, 84 farms responded. The second part was conducted by reviewing the animal welfare checks in the county. The purpose was to identify the weaknesses in calf husbandry. The results showed that the farmers have generally good knowledge of calves and their welfare. But in some farms the mortality rate and number of sick calves was high. The most common shortcomings were bad indoor environment, lack of feed and bad housing systems. A few farms kept calves in systems that greatly inhibited their natural behaviors. Both parts of the study showed that deficiencies in animal welfare legislation occurred. Some of these were of such importance that they may affect the calves both physically and mentally. The perception was that the farmers in most cases was aware of the provisions but chosed to ignore these. The conclusion of the study was that bad indoor climate, bad housing systems and lack of maintenance routines are thought to be causative factors regarding increased illness. Inhibited natural behavior may also have bad impact on calves health.
