SCA Packaging in Obbola is a paper mill that uses large amounts of water in the production of liner. The water that has been used forms an effluent highly contaminated by organic compounds that must be purified before it can be discharged to receiving waters. For the purification SCA uses an activated sludge process. The activated sludge process is a type of a biological treatment plant where the purification degree strongly relies on bacteria and their special properties. For operation of the activated sludge process mostly chemical-physical parameters are being used and no extended measurements of bacteria. For describing bacterial activity two measuring methods called Specific Oxygen Uptake (SOUR) and adenosine tri phosphate (ATP) can be used. The purpose of this report is to describe the bacterial activity at SCA in the activated sludge process by using ATP and SOUR and further investigate the methods as a complement for the other measuring parameters. The results show a lot of variety in bacterial activity. Practical experience of these methods gained more knowledge of things to have in mind. The SOUR method is a method for describing bacterial activity but is associated with some practical problems. The results from the ATP method show an event with a decline of living microorganisms in the activated sludge. As method ATP showed to be a fast and easy way for describing the bacterial activity. SCA will continue measure ATP and most likely this will render in a more evident picture of which values that represents normal conditions and how biological and chemical parameters cooperate.
