Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to find out why many permanent households in Strömsund is not using the local waste disposal system and where this garbage that not is taken care of by the county ends up. The study is based on a questionnaire sent to the households that did not empty their waste containers during 2011, a literature study of relevant publications and interviews with four other counties in Sweden. The study showed that there is not enough knowledge among the citizens in the county for garbage disposal in an environmental-friendly way. The fee for the disposal of garbage, lack of commitment and old habits is affecting the citizens’ behaviour how they take care of their garbage. The households are taking care of a lot of the garbage that is not taken care of by the county’s garbage disposal system by them. This can be done in both legal and illegal ways. The conclusion of the study is that Strömsund has to update their system before any secure results about the garbage problem can be determined.
