Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to compare cadmium concentrations in arable land between conventional and certified organic cultivation methods. The two farms being compared are located in Kristinehamn (Värmland). As arable land areas with organic cultivation methods were limited, their location was used as starting point to select arable land areas with conventional cultivation methods. Ten soil samples from two organically cultivated arable land areas and ten soil samples from conventionally cultivated arable land areas were selected and analyzed for cadmium concentrations and pH. In addition, three samples of organic slurry were measured for its cadmium content. The artificial fertilizer used for conventional cultivation had a known cadmium concentration. All samples were freeze dried and analyzed by the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

(ICP-MS) method. A loss-on-ignition analysis was carried out to investigate the amount of organic matter in the soil samples. Furthermore, the farmers left information about size of their arable land areas and amount of fertilizer used. Based on my investigation, there is no significant difference between cadmium concentrations in arable land cultivated with organic or conventional methods. Locality and cadmium deposition seems to be more important for cadmium concentrations. More sampling locations and measurements are needed to statistically ascertain whether there is any difference. A major survey spanning several years is necessary to obtain a holistic view of the current cadmium load in Swedish arable land.
