Abstract [en]

An oil sheen has been spotted several times on different occasions since 2003 on the river that flows through the city of Sundsvall. The municipality is now determined to find the potential leak, and have seen pollutants coming out from a storm water pipe in the industrial area of Nacksta. The purpose of this study is therefore to a) list different sampling methods, b) chart the stormwater system and take oil samples in different sites to detect differences in oil contents, and c) trace activities responsible for the leak and make an inventory of all enterprises with oil use in the area. Suitable sampling sites were selected and in total five grab samples were taken. Trace concentrations of oil were found in all sites, with the highest concentration in site two where three of the companies that uses oil are located. However, additional sampling is required to find more convincing evidence of this measurement. The method that gives the most reliable result is flow proportional weighted sampling, but is also the most expensive method. Finally, further investigations of all the companies using oil within the area would be preferred in a later study.
