The purpose of this study was to examine what impact aquaculture in Lake Gesunden could have on Ammerån in Jämtland County, when it comes to disease and genetic risks to natural populations. Gesunden is a lake in Jämtland as a part of a larger project has been posited to be suitable for fish farming. The study is primarily a literature review, but also included a study visit at a fish breeding station, as well as communication with various experts. Sweden has good conditions for the development of aquaculture, which is the sector of food production that increases the most in the world. Ammerån has a strong protective value based on its completely unregulated flow and protection from future hydropower development. In 2003 the area was declared as a nature reserve, and in 2005 Ammerån became a site of community importance, an area that helps to preserve the biodiversity in the future. In many cases the authorities lack the knowledge necessary for a correct assessment of fish farming matters. Results of this study indicate that fish farming in Gesunden carries a risk both when it comes to pathogens and genetic influences. Much of the literature points at the risks of genetic intervention between farmed fish stocks and wild populations. This is a concern for the long-term preservation of Ammerån. A guarantee that Ammerån not would be affected by aquaculture in Gesunden cannot be provided based on current knowledge, and today’s experts are not united when it comes to the risks.
