Using color histograms for describing images is common in a variety of applications. A known issue with color histograms is their sensitivity to light conditions, which complicates the use of this technique in environments with fluctuating ambient light. This study investigates changes in color histograms, with different lighting conditions and at different distances between camera and an object. The study also investigates how these changes differ between the color models RGB, HSV and L*a*b*.The conducted experiments show that color histograms is not affected at all, or only marginally affected by changes in the distance between the camera lens and object. The experiments also show that color histograms are sensitive to changing light conditions, and that the biggest changes occurs in the RGB color model, while the smallest changes occurs in the L*a*b* color model.
