Abstract [en]

This article discusses perspectives of health in relation to people with intellectual disabilities. Two approaches are introduced: health and lifestyle habits, and health, identity life styles. A point of departure is the specific social and societal position in which people with intellectual disabilities are living. If health is primarily linked to lifestyle habits, questions about quality of life, identity, well-being and socio-economic conditions for health risk being neglected. This relation between different aspects on health is always relevant in principle, but is further intensified in an institutional context of disability care. Based on these different perspectives, the article raises questions how education, work and employment, economic conditions, access to public healthcare as well as autonomy affects the ability for people with intellectual disabilities to make independent decisions in every-day life that promote health in terms of well-being, quality of life and social identification.

Abstract [sv]

 Syftet med denna artikel är att diskutera perspektiv på hälsa i förhållande till personer med utvecklingsstörning. Två övergripande perspektiv introduceras: hälsa och levnadsvanor samt hälsa, identitet och val av livsstil. En utgångs­punkt är den sociala och samhälleliga position personer med utvecklingsstör­ning befinner sig i. Denna relation mellan olika aspekter av hälsa är alltid re­levant i princip, men spetsas utan tvivel till i ett institutionellt sammanhang av vård- och omsorg. Med utgångspunkt i dessa perspektiv reser artikeln frågor om hur exempelvis utbildning, arbete och sysselsättning, ekonomiska förhål­landen, samt autonomi och kontroll påverkar möjligheterna för personer med utvecklingsstörning att träffa självständiga val i frågor som främjar hälsa, livs­kvalitet och socialt identifikation.
