Abstract [en]

This qualitative study addressed the teacher and his or her role and interaction with students within a socio-cultural perspective. The aim was to produce knowledge about what adult learners in a language circle considered helpful in their learning, with a focus on the teacher. The study's questions focused on the teacher and his or her role in learning and how adult students looked at their interaction with the teacher. The empirical part was built on eight interviews with adult students who had participated in a language circle (språkcirkel). The results showed that students felt that the teacher had an important - if not decisive - role in their learning. The concept of a "good teacher" was described by the students with terms that cannot be exclusively associated with education. Human factors, such as respect or personal chemistry, were considered to be fundamental conditions. Students also saw the interaction as a partnership and a premise for successful learning.
