We need to talk about SvEn : An insight into how the language choice of Swedish/English is organized and implemented for students in need of special aid. (Swedish)
The aim of this study was to examine how the language choice of Swedish/English (SvEn) was organized and implemented for secondary school students in need of special aid. By interviewing two principals and four SvEn teachers it was found that SvEn is of low priority to the schools but, in apparent contrast to this, the preferred language choice of a majority of students – many of whom were not in need of special aid. It was also found that no special needs teachers were involved in SvEn and most teachers that taught SvEn were not certificated Swedish and/or English teachers and, if they had a choice, would prefer not to teach SvEn at all. Since SvEn originally was conceived only to cater for those in need of special aid, the schools were seemingly unprepared and unable to meet the demands of the variety of students studying SvEn thus resulting in studentens spending up to 160 minutes per week doing a whole lot of nothing. The conclusion of this study was therefore that SvEn, as it stands today, is not fulfilling its promise of giving extra support to those in need of special aid. To ensure that the needs of the students are met, the purpose of SvEn needs to be re-examined and engaging duly qualified teachers and special needs teachers to teach SvEn is a requirement to assure the quality of education.
