Read-Alouds and Text Talk in Preschool. : An educational challenge. (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to illustrate how some preschool teachers work with read-alouds, how read-alouds were carried out in 9 preschools and with what purposes. In the background section several forms of read-alouds are discussed. The size of vocabulary, the possibility to have a conversation and the educational status of guardians are determinant factors for children’s development of language. The research methods encompassed interviews, inquiry forms and observations at 9 preschools. In this study three preschool teachers and two departments where observed during five read-alouds. 33 inquiry forms with 21 questions were answered by the teachers in seven preschools and two preschool classes. The results demonstrate that these preschool teachers were aware of the importance of read-alouds for children’s future development of reading and writing. Furthermore, the economy of the schools have effects on how the preschool practices are shaped. The lack of money obstructs the ambitions of the teachers. The pre-school teachers are well aware of the importance of planned reading with follow-up activities, to maximize the potential for the children to develop their language as much as possible. Although the teachers have the knowledge and they are aware that it is not effective to read for active listeners in preschools during the reading rest. Question is why the teachers despite knowledge about this fact, do not implement the read-aloud during another time in the preschool.
