Abstract [en]

Boden municipality has initiated an investigation regarding the possibility to reopen an old bathing place named Kläppen, located in Bodträsket. This study has investigated the potential to reopen Kläppen and the result will serve as a basis for further work to develop a bathing water profile, in accordance with the EU Directive concerning the management of bathing water quality. The purpose of establishing a bathing water profile is to be able to use it for identification of potential sources of faecal contamination and to work as a basis for actions to improve the bathing water quality. The water quality assessment is based on the bacteria levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci (Enterococcus) in the bathing water, where the limiting factor is the parameter that indicates the worst result. The results from the sampling campaigns performed during 2012 and 2013 indicate portable water for the majority of the sampling stations. Although, additional sampling campaigns are needed before a bathing profile could be established. An overview of potential pollution sources shows that sewage effluent and storm water may have negatively impact on the water quality. Some measures that should be taken to enable a reopening of Kläppen are described, such as increased sampling and establishing of an action program to reduce the input of harmful substances into Bodträsket. Improvement of security systems at the pumping stations and suitable alternatives for storm water management and overflows of sewage are proposed to ensure that human health and environment are not adversely affected by bacterial activities.
