Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction and Aim. Medication-assisted rehabilitation for opioid dependence (LARO) is still considered to be a controversial form of therapy. There are many different actors in society and among health care providers who are highly critical to the treatment program, even though research shows the opposite. The form of treatment has become more accepted over time but to our knowledge there is no research on how the individuals themselves experience LARO treatment. Therefore this study aimed to describe the experiences of taking part in LARO treatment among individuals with opioid dependence.

Design and Methods. Eleven interviews with narrative approach were conducted and the participants were asked to share their experiences of LARO treatment. The interviews were subjected to qualitative content analysis.

The results show that the experiences of LARO, could be likened to an invisible lifebuoy. Participants had the opportunity to change their life by capturing the lifebuoy and take the chance to live in dignity.  But despite the lifebuoy, they carried on the addiction demons and fought with hidden difficulties in their efforts to free themselves from their past. The participants were very grateful for the chance at a dignity life which they have received in the LARO treatment.

Discussion and Conclusions. The results show that participation in LARO treatment gave those people a new chance to a life of dignity, but that they also had a desire to be free from being a patient in LARO. Participants were hopeful about the future. They wanted to experience how life feels and that life consists of so much more than drugs.
