The purpose of this report was to investigate animal owners of small sheep- or goatfarms acquire the knowledge needed to keep their animals and what problems they have identified themselves with the animal keeping. Small sheep- and goatfarms have become an increasing problem for the animal welfare in the county of Västernorrland in northern Sweden – have the animal owners themselves identified the same problems as the animal welfare have? The next step was to analyze what authorities as the Swedish Board of Agriculture or the County of Västernorrland can do to help the animal owners and improve the situation. The results of this study were obtained through interviews and by visiting two animal owners. The results show that a majority of the animal keepers acquire knowledge by reading literature and/or by talking to other persons who are knowledgeable about the animals. A few of the animal owners rely solely on what they’ve been learning while growing up with animals – which weren’t always sheep or goats. The results suggest that the biggest problem is that the knowledge about the animals feeding needs are lacking among the majority of the animal holders. Few of the animal owners have ever had any contact with the authorities and don’t turn to them for questions unless they really have to. Different actions can be made from the authorities, but the most important is to continue to work with organizations that are committed to the welfare of the animals and increase the numbers of different organizations. By doing so the authorities can hope to spread knowledge and increase the level of understanding for the animals.
