Abstract [en]

An increasing number of people choose today to reside in urban areas which lead to an increased urbanization and that dwellings are located close to infrastructure. This leads to an increased risk of exposure to traffic noise. The noise exposure is higher in dwellings with windows in only one direction facing a trafficked road. This type of apartment is called single sided. An apartment which also has windows towards a quieter side is called double sided. Traffic noise can also limit the possibility to open windows. This limitation is higher in single sided apartments towards a road compared to double sided apartments. The purpose of this study was to investigate if people in Umeå experienced noise differently in single sided apartments towards a road, towards a courtyard or in double sided apartments. A questionnaire survey was made in central Umeå. The questionnaires were sent to participants in single sided and double sided apartments in an area with a high level of noise exposure. No significant difference in noise annoyance according to kind of apartment could be identified. The proportion of people disturbed in their sleep was highest in single sided apartment facing the courtyard which may have been because they had open windows more often. The possibility to open windows without annoyance from traffic noise was important to the participants. The statistical population in this study was too small to draw certain conclusions and the results should thus only be interpreted as indications.
