Tourism planning is important for many cities in order to succesfully handle the tourism flows and manage the outcomes tourism has on a city. In order for the tourism planning to be successfull there is a demand to incorporate sustainability in the planning process, the sustainability incorporates economic, social and environmental factors. Sustainability has since the 1990 become a well known concept due to the Bruntlands commission (1987) that defined sustainable developement as "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Even though sustainability is used in the tourism planning there has shown to be a lack in the tourism planning process at the local scale and little has been directly investigated about the long- term sustainability. This paper, therefore investigate how Åre and Umeå in Sweden incorporate the long-term sustainability in the tourism planning and what the reasons to this may be. Futhermore the paper seeks to investigate if the cities incorporate one of the three factors more.
The result of the study confirms that Åre and Umeå incorporate the long-term sustainability in the tourism planning. Umeå has shown to be in the starting point of using sustainability while Åre has incorporate the sustainability more. The result confirms that there is a lot more focus on the environmental factor in Åre and Umeå then the economic and social. Futhermore the paper investigates the differences in the cities tourism planning process.
