"Varför ska du bli lärare?": En undersökning av dem som studerar till lärare.

Abstract [en]

Despite numerous articles in the press about the Swedish teachers insufficient wages and lack of career opportunities there are still thousands of people that go to college every year to become teachers. This paper investigates those who are currently studying or recently graduated from the teachers program at northern Swedish collage to see what can be done to improve the teacherprograms status. The survey is based on Pierre Bourdieu´s theories on class distinctions. Earlier research on the subject has shown that about half of those how study to become teachers are women whit a working class background. Another big group among the teacher student is men whit middle class background and relatively low grades. This peppers results matches the results of the earlier research, a fact that increases this papers credibility. The results indicate that the middle and upper classes are more likely to choose a career as teacher because of their fondness of their subjects while the lower classes are more drawn to the prospect of working with young people. The papers result also indicates that those who study to become teachers don´t seem to care that much about their wages, instead it´s the young people whom they will work with and the love they have for their subject that´s the appeal. This leads us to believe that big groups of people might choose another education and career because they are drawn to higher wages and more career options.
