”Varför peka på ett problem som inte finns än?”: – En studie om hur lärare uppfattar sitt arbete med rasism och främlingsfientlighet i undervisningen.

This study examines how ten upper secondary school teachers in two neighbouring towns in the northern parts of Sweden perceive their teaching regarding racism and xenophobia, what difficulties they find in working with these topics and what they find themselves in need of to teach these topics in class. The method for examining these questions is qualitatively directed where I used interviews as the tool for collecting data. The results show that one of the teachers says that she actively and varyingly works with racism and xenophobia; however, all of them feel that there are some aspects that limit their teaching of these topics. These aspects are time, knowledge, a common policy and collaboration between co-workers. Furthermore, they feel that these aspects constrains them into prioritizing the academic competences using whole class discussions as an only method for dealing with racist and xenophobic situations occurring in class. Since some of them have encountered racist situations at their school, they feel that this is not enough. To be able to initiate a more preventive education of racism and xenophobia the teachers, I and the literature used in this study, believe that these aspects of limitation need to be revised.
