Abstract [en]

This phenomenological research focuses on the experiences of intuition and intuitive

communication in psychotherapeutic interaction. Partially structured interviews were

undertaken with eight experienced psychotherapists. An Interpretative

Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) process was then applied using five steps that

resulted in the psychotherapists’ descriptions being organized into seven superordinate

themes. All the psychotherapists interviewed in the study accepted that the

phenomenon of intuitive communication in psychotherapy exists in some form. They

all state that intuitive communication is dependent on an empathic ability. All agree

that, the capability for intuitive communication can be trained and developed. To date

there is virtually no recognition of the importance of intuitive communication in

psychotherapy training, irrespective of school. There is consensus that such training

would be of benefit in a psychotherapist’s education. The possible links between

mindfulness training and the development of intuitive ability are suggested.

Neurobiological evidence that may explain the existence of possible innate, intuitive

communication between mothers and their babies, and how this might help

understand the potential for intuitive communication in adults, suggests an area of

investigation for further study.
