Poetry is for wimps : A study concerning students' and teachers' attitudes towards poetry in Swedish high school (English)
Abstract [en]

This degree project examines teachers’ and pupils’ attitudes towards poetry, in what manner teachers reason about poetry and how teachers are describing their poetry tutoring in the courses Svenska 1 and Svenska 2 in the Swedish high school. Four teachers were interviewed and 99 high school students have answered a questionnaire. Previous research has shown that students seem to have a negative attitude towards poetry, and that several teachers choose not to use poetry when teaching Swedish language, among other things because of the pupils’ attitude towards poetry. The result of this degree project shows that the four teachers are personally positive towards poetry, but that only three of the teachers are positive towards using poetry in their teaching. The teachers’ opinion about the attitude of the pupils differs. One of the four teachers thinks that her pupils aren’t interested in poetry. Among the other three teachers, two have the experience that pupils are sceptical in the beginning, but after a while, the attitude of the pupils changes and becomes more positive. The fourth teacher thinks that his pupils enjoy poetry in school. The questionnaire shows that about half of the students claim that poetry is boring, while the other half are either positive, or show a neutral attitude. Since poetry is never mentioned in the syllabi for Svenska 1 and Svenska 2, a teacher can choose whether he/she wants to teach poetry in school. This degree project demonstrates that pupils don’t have such a negative attitude as previous research has shown. Teachers see benefits with using poetry in their teaching, and many pupils see benefits with learning poetry. My conclusion is that poetry should not be overlooked, because it seems to be a valid way to accomplish the knowledge requirements of the syllabi.
