Organizing platform: managing the paradoxes of architectural firms

Abstract [en]

Organizational life is characterized by paradoxes. Paradoxes can be found in a growing number of industries where creativity is the key to sustaining competitive advantage. Based on two architectural works built by three leading Scandinavian architectural firms, I posit the view of an organizing platform – as interplay between structure, process and perspective – to deal with paradoxical tensions. The paper explicates how the organizing platform gives rise to synthesis and ‘thirdness’. The data from such a creative setting shows how synthesis and ‘thirdness’ are ingrained in the practice of architectural firms. This paper contributes to the ongoing discussion on the theory of paradox by examining creative organizations and demonstrates how creativity and the embedded paradoxes are dealt with within the organizing platform.
