The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of how teachers understand and implement the concept of biodiversity in their teaching. An additional purpose is to find out how teaching is linked and described to the curriculum for this concept.

With a master's degree in biology, and after some time I got the opportunity to teach in the natural science subjects in elementary school and their primarily in biology. During my short time in the school world, I have noticed that there are some doubts in the subject regarding knowledge in biology. Most teachers feel that it is abstract and difficult to interpret. What I mainly thought about this is that my colleagues feel some confusion about the concept of biodiversity and how it will be implemented in teaching.

This study was conducted in three secondary schools in a small community in central Sweden. Four informants was interviewed through semi-structured interviews. The result shows that the concept of biodiversity and its content is hard to describe. And the study also shows that teachers vary their approach where practical elements such as field studies are completely missing. It depends largely that time of teaching moments is missing. High school teachers reported that they base their teaching according to current regulatory documents but despite this could not center the content of teaching specified. The results support several previous researches from different parts of the world. Despite the difficult to define the concept of biodiversity and its content are the studies in the subject relatively few and there are no previous studies from Sweden. Further research for the future is suggested students' perspective of the concept of biodiversity and mapping of university content in the teaching of biodiversity for future teachers.
