Abstract [en]

This thesis adressing environments for three species; nandu (Rhea americana, emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae and camel (Camelus ferus) in a zoo named Mickelbo Farm (Umeå municipality). Improvements can be made by investigating animal behavior and occurrences as abnormal behavior environmental quality. To support development of new methods for animal keeping, the thesis addresses the question if there are differences in behavior between different individuals, and if there are differences during different time of a day. Significant differences were found in the species. Nandu male was more alert than the females. Between the emu pair the male showed more threatening behaviors. Camel mare differed between the other camels, the mare sought food in smaller scale and was more alert. For all species were behaviors like foraging that occurred more often in the morning and in the afternoon there were almost no threatening behaviors between and within species. Based on the report, the thesis propose several concrete proposals that can be implemented to stimulate camels foraging behavior and to better support dust bathing possibilities for birds. The thesis also summarizes experiences and efforts made by other mini zoos to improve their environments. Improvements that also can be suitable to apply on the mini zoo investigated in this report. To conclude, it has been found that even small primary environmental changes can have a big impact on animal well-being and provide a more positive and richer environment.
