Abstract [sv]

The general purpose of this study is to explore how gender is constructed in two textbooks for beginners in Swedish as a second language. This is done by conducting a qualitative analysis of selected texts and images from said books. Based on an ideology critical analysis of selected texts and images the following questions have been answered: How are women and men portrayed in the textbooks texts and images? In what areas are women and men represented? How do these expressions in text and pictures relate to the gender contract? The results of this study are that women and men are portrayed in everyday, work, relationship and love related situations. The results depict that women work in the public sector and men in the private sector, the heterosexual norm is salient and is depicted in almost all texts.
