e-Psychiatry? : Nurses' Experiences of Web-based Audiovisual IT in Psychiatric Care. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund.

Syfte. Att belysa sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av webbaserad audiovisuell IT i psykiatriskt omvårdnadsarbete.

Design. Kvalitativ, deskriptiv design har använts.

Kontext. Intervjuerna utfördes i Sundsvall i oktober, 2014.

Deltagare.

Metod. Kvalitativ innehållsanalys.

Resultat.

Abstract [en]

Background. Even more studies show how e-Psychiatry and web-based audiovisual IT can be used in psychiatric- and somatic care. Only a few of these studies are about nurses' experiences with sound and picture transferring IT for communication.

Objective. To illuminate nurses' experiences of web-based audiovisual IT in psychiatric care.

Design. A qualitative, descriptive design has been used.

Settings. The interviews were completed in Sundsvall, in October, 2014.

Participants. Eight nurses were interviewed. A combination of opportunistic- and purposeful sampling has been used.

Method. Qualitative Content Analysis.

Findings. The study ended in five main categories and fifteen subcategories. The main categories were: e-Psychiatry as a phenomena, e-Psychiatry as an experience, e-Psychiatric possibilities, e-Psychiatry and limiting factors, and e-Psychiatry in the intermediate human dimension. The findings suggest that e-Psychiatry mainly will be used for co-ordination, education, collecting information, and to increase access. The disadvantages were described as technical difficulties, security risks, and the feeling of reduced control.

Significance. The study proposes that e-Psychiatry, is being thought of as a communicative aid, instead of being seen as a 'speciality' in the realms of psychiatric care.
