Abstract [en]

While phraseology has been extensively researched in German lexicology over the last few decades, it is largely a neglected field in Swedish linguistics. This accounts for the fact that German-Swedish contrastive studies are rare.

The present paper is part of a project studying the use and functions of idioms in different text types in the press, mainly from a German-Swedish contrastive perspective. The specific focus of the paper is the sports report in German, Swedish and Fenno-Swedish national and regional newspapers. The analysis is limited to idioms expressing movement.

Contrary to our hypothesis, such idioms make up only a small portion of all idioms in this corpus. They occur in a number of identified contexts, where they fulfil specific functions such as adding elements of expressivity or reflecting the authors’ attitudes and emotions. A further finding is that the German idioms tend to describe movement in an abstract sense, whereas the Swedish ones are more concrete in nature.
