Uppgradering av Poppadumtorget (Swedish)
The focus of the project is to strengthen the community at Poppadum Square, by encouraging the female poppadum makers in Dharavi, to make an example on how an slum area can be improved and transformed without breaking up a neighborhood. The direction of the project started off by research on site, through mapping, observations and interviews. The found positive impact poppadum making had for the neighborhood made the aim of the project to be about strengthening the statues of poppadum making. By promoting health and working conditions and by raise the general level of education among women making poppadums. The people in Dharavi are used to share common space and adapt regarding to different times of day and different activities taking place. The projects viability is dependent on a cooperation between the people in the neighborhood and other stakeholders. The company "Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad", commonly referred to as Lijjat, is already present in the area and would be able to gain better reputation from taking part in this project. The art school run by the NGO "Reality Tours and Travels" could also benefit from the community building. The final result of the the project is a community building and a combined depot and bakery located by the Poppadum Square. The ground floor of the community center is public and serve the community as well as the art school. Except from the bearing construction all walls are openable which allow for a lot of different sized room to be created according to what activities are taking place. By adding levels to the ground floor the transition to the different rooms would make them appear more or less public. The upper floor would serve as the educational area, without being closed off by a door it will allow for a more private space to create a room outside of the home where women should feel and appear safe. The Lijjat depot and bakery would serve as a working place for women outside of their home and justify Dharavi as an important part of Mumbai, rather than a slum . Both these inventions would strengthen the statues of poppadum making, allow women around Poppadum Square to continue to be seen as rightful users of public space and continue to realize women empowerment.
