Pupils' reading habits in and out of school : A study of children with and without reading disabilities in grades 4 and 5 (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine students, in reading difficulties, reading habits in and out of school. Based on the purpose, the following questions were formulated: What, what amount and type of text, do students in grades 4 and 5 read? What, what amount and type of text, do students in reading difficulties in grades 4 and 5 read? Which perceptions express students in reading difficulties, about reading and their interest in reading? 20 students in grade 4 and 5 participated in the study consisting of three parts. Part 1 consisted of a survey of students reading skills, part 2 was a reading diary and part 3 was focusgroupinterviews with students who demonstrated reading difficulties according to the test in part 1. It is clear from the results that pupils in reading difficulties, in the average, read less than other students, and that the type of reading activities are different at school and in leisure time. Factors that according to the results affect students reading habits and the desire to read are access to reading materials that suit the students’ interest and literacy, digital tools for reading and book recommendations from classmates.
