Reading has an important function in society, but reading comprehension has deteriorated among Swedish students. Therefore the school has an important role to develop students´ reading comprehension. The aim of the study is to investigate three high school students´ understanding of the strategies that could improve their reading comprehension as well as a special education teacher's idea of what interventions are being made to improve reading comprehension. The method consists of qualitative interviews. Three research questions are raised: What strategies does the student use in order to understand a text? What kind of support would the student like to have to develop reading comprehension? What kind of interventions does the special education teacher use to develop and support students` reading comprehension? The results show that students have a limited ability to describe their reading comprehension strategies, probably since they have not been given the opportunity to develop these in school. For them, reading comprehension is all about reading a text and answering questions. The special education teacher emphasizes the importance of text conversations in all subjects and that students are taught reading strategies to improve them. Students who still have difficulties with reading comprehension can get alternative tools and training interventions in smaller groups.
