Women's experience of health care during miscarriage : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Approximately one fifth of all known pregnancies end in miscarriage. Several studies support that miscarriages are followed by severe psychological distress, and that women may go through a life crisis. Objective: The aim of this literature study is to highlight women’s healthcare experience when miscarrying.Method: Database search were made in the databases CINAHL, PubMed and PsycInfo with keywords miscarriage, experience, bereavement, and qualitative. Ten articles were selected and analyzed by inspiration of content analysis.Main findings: Six categories emerged from the analysis: receiving the news, to receive information, medical explanation, the need for emotional support, sense of abandonment, the need for follow-up.Conclusions: Women wish for a quick diagnosis and don’t want to wait for care. They are in great need of emotional support and empathic treatment as well as getting information by healthcare professionals about the physical and expected psychological outcomes; something that few feel they get. There is also a great need for some kind of follow-up. If the woman’s needs are not met, the memories of the care received will usually be negative.
