Abstract [en]

Depression is a public health concern and the prevalence is expected to increase in future years. Despite this few people seek help and even fewer get adequate treatment. Physical activity has shown a negative relationship with depression and increased activity could potentially be an alternative to traditional treatments for depression. This study investigated the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and depression in a population of 983 applicants to an Internet treatment program. A number of additional factors, including gender, age, marital status, and medication and their relationship with depression were also investigated. The primary outcome measures were MADRS-S and PHQ-9 for depression and IPAQ for physical activity and sedentary behaviour. The results showed a negative relationship between physical activity and depression on PHQ-9 and a positive relationship between sedentary behaviour on MADRS-S. Gender, age, marital status, and medication were also found to be associated with depression. The study shows there is a relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and depression in a population of applicants to an Internet treatment program.
