Abstract [en]

The boat inhumation burials of the Late Iron Age in the Lake Mälaren area have attracted a great deal of interest since  their first discovery  through archaeological excavations almost a century and a half ago. In earlier research the focus has mainly been on the exclusive artefacts found in some of the graves. This paper investigates how the grave furnishings are distributed spatially within boat graves at seven sites in the provinces north of Lake Mälaren. Whole animals that accompanied the deceased in the graves are also studied. The material is studied in a comparative, gender-based and chronological perspective. The aim of the investigation is to highlight common features as well as differences. A brief analysis of the boat graves' chronological and spatial relationships to their surrounding cemeteries is also included.
