Earth-abundant bifunctional 3D electrode for efficient water electrolysis in alkaline medium

To efficiently drive both water electrolysis half reactions in the same medium, a bifunctional 3D electrode is prepared comprising Co3O4 nanospheres nucleated on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) which themselves are grown directly on the carbon paper conductive substrate as the current collector. Due to the firm anchoring of each element of the electrode, a high stability and large electrochemical activity for both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER) at a low onset potential are observed. To attain a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 0.1 M KOH solution, overpotentials of only 0.47 V and 0.38 V are needed for OER and HER respectively.
