Russia in swedish media "A riddle, wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma". : An analysis of Aftonbladets and Expressens leader articles opinions about the national defence and image of Russia. (English)
This studie is using discourse analysis to examine Aftonbladets and Expressens leader articles. The purpose of the studie is to find out what kind of national defence the papers are promoting based on their attitudes towards Russia. In the analysis Laclaus och Mouffes notions of nodalpoints, floating signifiers and subject positions etc, are being used. Previous studies have showned that Russia usually is portrayed like a rising threat and as a danger to neighbour countries, including Sweden. The theories presented in this studie is somewhat unusal to use when investigating the image of Russia in massmedia. The theoretical framework consist orientalism, framing and hegemony. A total of sixteen articles have been analysed, and they were all leader articles. The results showed that Aftonbladet and Expressen agree upon how to perceive Russia. Both papers stated that Russia is a threat and also a mystery. The differencies is find in what kind of national defence the papers are argumenting for. Aftonbladet emphasized that sweden should still be nonaligned, but Expressen on the other hand, wants Sweden to join Nato. This studie have showned that even though the leaders in the studied papers have different political views, they both see Russia as an unchanging, mysterious , threatening country. The studie have also showned that orientalism is fruitfull to use when examining the image of Russia in western media.
