In what ways could reading comprehension be affected by educational activities within the field of reading strategies? : An intervention study (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine in what ways reading strategies affect reading comprehension, focussing on students who experience problems with reading comprehension. The study has been conducted within a national program at Swedish upper secondary school level and in three classes.


The analysis has been concentrating on a socio-cultural perspective and the methods include student interviews, classroom observations, questionnaires for teachers and standardized diagnoses of reading comprehension.


The results show that students with difficulties in reading comprehension improve their results by explicit education in reading strategies in accordance with Berkeley, Scruggs and Mastropieri (2010) and Palincsar and Brown (1984), who claim that working with reading strategies provides positive results in reading comprehension for students with a less developed reading comprehension. The study also shows that skilled readers do not profit to the same extent as poor readers by explicit education in reading strategies.
