To prepare pupils for the communicative society : A teacher's language-oriented work in a class of younger pupils with langage impairment (English)
Abstract [en]

Research questions: What characterizes the physical environment in the classroom? How are opportunities for language learning structured? What characterizes the language interactions? How does the teacher approach the students? What visions does the principal have for students with language impairment? Method: observations in the classroom and qualitative interviews with the teacher and the principal. Results: The physical teaching environment, the language learning opportunities as well as the interaction of language in the classroom was characterized by an active language focused teaching. This active teaching method substantially showed the criteria that researchers consider important for a communication supportive classroom. The teacher created a positive atmosphere built on a relational perspective by meeting the students with respect in a climate of allowance where mistakes were seen as opportunities to learn. The principal has a clear vision permeated by a relational perspective: To prepare the students for a communicative society.
