Abstract [en]

World Health Organization (WHO, 2015) reports that 80% of the world’s population doesn’t engage in the daily recommendations of physical activity. The positive effects of physical activity on health has been studied and proved for several years. Recent studies have also examined the effects of intrinsic motivation on self-reported physical activity level. Intrinsic motivation is based on three basic needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of positive feedback on intrinsic motivation, hypothetically leading to an increase in objective physical activity level. Methods: 17 sedentary adults were given a SenseWear™ armband for two periods of 7 days. Between periods the subjects were given two kinds of feedback 1) positive feedback (PF) 2) regular feedback (IF), based on their individual physical activity level. Physical activity was measured through duration over MET 3,0, total energy expenditure (kJ/kcal), number of steps and physical activity level (PAL). To measure intrinsic motivation The Behavioural Regulatory Exercise Questionere-2 was used. Results: PF showed a significantly higher PAL value (p < 0,05) compared to IF. There were no significant differences between the groups for the other measurements. Conclusion: Positive feedback given to sedentary adults resulted in higher PAL. Based on the results in this study future research should focus on positive feedback as a tool for developing a healthier and more active society.
