Abstract [en]

This study serves to define concussion in football, its prevalence and physiological mechanisms. Preventive methods and guidelines for return-to-play will be discussed within a context of football. This article can provide both practical and theoretical information for people in football on how to deal with concussions. In this article the studies used regarding concussion in football had priority in the collecting process. The literature suggests that most concussions occur in contact with an opponent and that certain playing positions are more exposed for concussion than others. Bouts of heading are potentially dangerous for growing children, thus it is stressed that proper heading technique practice should be implemented in the training sessions. There are also reports showing that knowledge of concussions among coaches and players is low, which could pose a harmful threat, in form of a Second Impact Syndrome, to the players if they continue to play with a non recovered concussion.
