Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the housing of stallions, mares, and geldings in their respective management environments in Sweden today. A survey focusing on the housing of stallions was distributed to 175 Swedish stud farms and stallion holders, the result was a 19% answering frequency. The general opinion on the current housing of stallions was addressed in a survey answered by officials responsible for horse management at nine of the 21 county administrative boards of Sweden. Part of the study was also a behavioural inquiry of six stallions performed by me. Three stallions were kept in typical single box systems, whereas the other three were observed in a group housing of 10-15 stallions and geldings at a stud farm. Unwanted and stress-related behaviour occurred more frequently in the single box stallions. The regulations of horse management and welfare provided by the Swedish Government and the Swedish Board of Agriculture were compared to the answers of the surveyed stud farm and stallion holders. The results indicate that it is important to advocate a higher welfare of stallions through a regulatory compliance and increased knowledge about their needs. The conclusion is that there exists a difference between actual management of and governmental attitude toward stallions that need to be overbridged.
