Abstract [en]

In the north of Sweden lies the municipality of Umeå and the city Umeå, the later with a growing population which increases the demand for housing. In today’s society, environmental questions and issues are of high concern, especially in regards of the homes that are being built. This study based on literature research and interviews, investigates whether locally active construction companies adapts to building more environmental friendly homes, mainly focusing on the possibilities of lowering the energy consumption. In order to narrow down the topic, a few specific parameters are pinpointed. The result of this study showed that even though many companies are willing to build more environmental friendly and sustainable homes, it also depends on whether the order placer of the building is willing to go that extra mile economically. Though, the results based of the investigated buildings can be considered as more environmentally adapted as compared to older buildings. When a comparison was made between apartment buildings from the 1970’s and recently, there was a significant difference in the energy use and U-value. As the study performed did not include all relevant parameters regarding environmental and sustainable adaption of houses, it’s uncertain to assume whether these investigated buildings were truly adapted.
